• HORMONES: A genetic sensitivity to or overproduction of Dihydrotestosterone(DHT) can be one cause of thinning hair. DHT is a toxin that created by an interaction between testosterone(present in both man & women) and the enzyme 5a-reductase, both of which are found in the scalp. DHT signals the hair follicle’s to begin a process called Follicular Miniaturization, during which the width of the hair shaft,the strength of the follicle & the length of the growth cycle decreases progressively over time. Hair grows back thinner,finer & more fragile.
• EXCESS SEBUM: Sebum keeps the hair & skin moisturized and protects the scalp from certain bacteria. Excess sebum, however, can build up in the follicle and harden when it reaches the scalp. This hardened sebum breeds bacteria, damages the follicle and blocks nutrients necessary for growth. Further, excess sebum can lead to increased levels of DHT & resulting Follicular Miniaturization.
• ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE: Exposure to UVA/UVB rays increases the formation of free radicals,which can attack follicles and lead to thinning. Other elements, such as chlorine ,salt water & pollutants can clog follicles,building up over time and promoting an unhealthy scalp.
• DIETS & NUTRITION: Poor diet & nutrition can lead to biotin, proteins, fatty acid & vitamin deficiencies, resulting in dry,brittle hair that has a tendency to break and grow thinner over time.
• STRESS: Individuals under extreme stress can enter a stage called Telogen Effluvium. The hair follicles stop growing,and enter into a temporary resting phase, after which significant shedding occurs. Stress also causes the body to produce additional testosterone, which is converted to DHT.
• MEDICATION: Certain medications, which treat conditions such as acne, high cholesterol.high blood pressure,depression,or even birth control pills,can cause follicles to enter a resting stage and result in thinning or hair loss.
• HEALTH CONDITIONS: A wide range of health conditions can cause hair loss or thinning, among post-pregnancy,thyroid disorder,anaemia andnauto-immune diseases.

We can suffer from any of the above through out our lives and once your follicles have died that’s it, they can’t be reversed. However for the remaining follicles that are not dead we can use products that can help to regenerate them.
