Sensitive Scalp Treatments at Anthony James
The problem with a sensitive scalp is one of the hardest scalp problems to diagnose and treat. It is hard to determine the degree of sensitivity because it is subjective to the individual. Some peoples degree of sensitivity are different then others. All skin types can react sensitivity as a result of changes in the skin for example, dry scalps tend to be irritated by the sebaceous gland not working correctly while oily scalps are severely irritated by too much sebum (natural oil).
Self-assessment
Self-assessment of your own scalp is important because surveys show a large proportion of the adults grade their scalp as sensitive. The symptoms can vary from a feeling of tightness, itching, redness, inflamed areas of the scalp and skin to flaking. These symptoms can occur at any time and can often be mistaken for allergies.
Allergies
An allergy is an immune system overreaction to one or more specific substances. An example is hay fever where the mucous membranes react to the pollen of certain plants. The skin reacts the same way and a true allergy is when the skin always reacts to a specific substances as soon as it comes into contact with it. The only course of action is to see an allergologist who will determine the cause of the allergy.
Sensitive scalp is usually somewhat inconsistent in its reactions. Sometime a reaction is violent, sometimes moderate and sometimes there's no reaction at all.
Causes of Sensitive Scalp
In most cases the barrier function of the skin is impaired, irritants can then penetrate the scalp more easily. The causes of sensitive scalp can be many and varied. Internal factors such as stress, tension, nervous or organic strains (health, medication) or diet can produce sensitive reactions as can climatic factors e.g. air from heating systems, cold etc. External influences, such as unsuitable cosmetic products must also be considered just as much as the scalp being too dry, oily, or suffering from dandruff.
