Could there be a link between hair and Olympic excellence?
Could our gold medal winners put at least some of their success down to their hairstyle?*
Suspecting a potential breakthrough in hair cause and effect, we decided to investigate.
In conducting our research we noticed that among the UK male gold medal winning cohort three main hair trends could be seen:
(Almost) no hair.
Gold medal winners Mo Farah, Liam Heath, Scott Durant and Mohamed Sbihi all sport the minimal hair look. Clearly for long distance running and anything involving a water vessel (boat) very short hair is a must.
Facial hair was in evidence amongst those who won gold in team sports: Paul Bennet (rowing), Tom Ransley (rowing), William Snatch (rowing) and Sir Bradley Wiggins (team cycling). In contrast to individual rowing (see above), team rowing demands the individuals have a beard. In terms of team cycling, it’s only essential to have a beard to win gold if you are already in possession of a Knighthood.
Short sides and long on top.
We had excellent examples of this most coiffured style amongst our gold medal winners. Jack Laugher (diving), Max Whitlock (gymnastics), Justin Rose (golf) and Chris Mears (synchronised springboard) all demonstrate excellent hairstyling. We would not like to stereotype these athletes, but the evidence seems to suggest that this hairstyle is utilised the most in sports where a certain degree of presentation is required.
The evidence speaks for itself. In order to reach the top of your game you much choose a sport appropriate hairstyle.
We strongly suspect, however, that in addition to having marvellous hair, those winning gold in this year’s Olympic games probably had to put in thousands of hours of practise since the age of five.
