There are two types of applications with a strand by strand hair extensions - hot or cold fusion.  The extensions are attached in small sections using keratin glue bonds. The strands are between 0.5 gram to 1 gram of individual hairs and are attached with either a keratin glue bonded point or with a micro link.

Strand By Strand Hair Extensions Using Hot Fusion

A heated-tool bonds the keratin U-tip hair extensions to your hair. The heat is used to melt the keratin glue and your hair is placed in between to seal it. Bonds are attached to the root but leave some room for your natural hair to move and grow.

Pros:

  • Suitable for coarse, thick hair.
  • They are the most durable hair extensions.
  • With the correct maintenance, they are lasting up to six months.
  • Look very natural.

Cons:

  • The average application time is between 2-6 hours. 
  • Hot fusion requires heat to install hair extensions which can damage the client's hair if not applied properly.
  • Can have a bit of discomfort until they settle down.
  • Can cause an itchy scalp.

Maintenance:

  • Shampoo in Sulphate Free shampoo.
  • Don't rub your hair dry when wet.
  • When you brush your hair, be careful not to pull at the bonds.
  • Avoid any oil-based products and over-styling.

Cold Fusion, Micro-Links or I-tip

Micro-links or I-tip hair extensions are where a small amount of your hair is pulled through a bead or ring and clamped shut with a pair of hair extension pliers.

Pros:

  • Individual strands move more naturally.
  • No heat or glue is needed.
  • Can last up to six months.
  • If there is any slippage, it doesn't take much time to fix.
  • Reusable.

Cons:

  • Around 2-6 hours for application.
  • They can be visible if not appropriately placed.
  • They can slip if not appropriately placed.
  • You could experience some discomfort.
  • Can cause an itchy scalp in the first couple of weeks.
  • Are visible in thin, fine hair.
  • If the application or removal is incorrect, it can cause damage to your hair.
